Welding in Acton, CA

We weld for Acton properties from our Lancaster shop, either at the gate or fence where it stands or on a bench at Division Street. Acton has its own fence rules under the Acton Community Standards District, and some welding requests run straight into them, so we check the rule before we cut steel.

How an on-site gate weld works, step by step

  1. Design rendering of an open picket steel gate corner scraping an arc into a gravel drive, its corner weld cracked

    Find the drag

On a climbing drive, a leaf that has dropped drags at the end of its swing, and the scraping cracks the welds at its bottom corners.

  2. Design rendering of a canvas welding screen beside the bottom corner of an open picket steel gate on a windy hillside

    Shield it from wind

Wind can blow shielding gas off a weld and leave holes inside it. For an exposed gate we bring flux-core, which makes its own shielding, and stick.

  3. Design rendering of the lower hinge corner of an open picket steel gate with a new diagonal brace, clearing a gravel drive

    Level it and brace it

The leaf comes back level, its bottom corners are welded through, and a diagonal brace is added or renewed, so it moves freely by hand again.

On site, up the drive

Acton is canyon and ranch country south of the main valley, and we come down from Lancaster to reach it. Many properties sit behind a gate on a private drive that climbs, so the first question on a site job is access. Tell us how close a truck can get to the work, and whether the drive is steep, narrow or gated further up.

Work that can leave the property is welded in the shop: a bracket, a trailer, a cracked part, or a gate leaf that needs squaring flat. The shop is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and small repairs can walk in.

Before you weld plate onto an open fence

One welding request needs a code check in Acton more than anywhere else we cover: adding sheet, plate or slats to an open fence or gate for privacy. LA County Code 22.302.060.G, part of the Acton district rules, limits a perimeter fence to open types such as split rail, open wood, wire or wrought iron style, and wants at least 70 percent of the whole fence area to stay see-through. It also bars slats or other view-obscuring material inserted into or fixed onto the fence. Plate welded across a picket run is exactly that kind of material.

The open fence type list in G.1 exempts residential lots under 10,000 square feet and places where Title 22 calls for screening elsewhere. The 70 percent rule and the ban on slats in G.2 carry no lot size exception of their own, so on a small lot ask Los Angeles County planning how the two fit your parcel. Solid lengths are allowed where they are mainly structural or a minor design feature, which on a welded fence means the posts, the rails and the frame. We keep the infill open unless planning tells you otherwise.

Name spans over the drive

A ranch entrance span carrying the property name is a welded job, and the district sets its limits in 22.302.060.F.2.c: one span per lot, its top no more than 20 feet above natural grade, and no more than 12 square feet of sign face combined. We draw the span and the gate under it together, inside those figures.

A gate on a grade

On a climbing drive, two swing leaves need room to sweep and a near level apron at the opening, so a leaf that has dropped even slightly starts to drag at the end of its swing, and the scraping cracks the welds at its bottom corners. The repair is to bring the leaf back level, weld the corners through, and add or renew the diagonal brace. Where the grade is too steep for any swing leaf to clear, a new gate may need to slide instead. We build custom steel gates in the Lancaster shop, cut and welded to the measured opening, and deliver them.

Wind and a site weld

For weather we go by the National Weather Service station at Palmdale Airport, the closest climate record we use for Acton. Wind on a canyon lot does not behave like wind on the open valley floor, so treat its figures as a guide. In April 2026 it recorded a 50 mph gust on April 3.

Wind matters for site work because many welding processes protect the molten weld with a cloud of shielding gas. Miller Electric notes that wind can blow that gas away and leave porosity, holes trapped inside the weld. For windy outdoor work it points to self-shielded flux-cored wire, which makes its own shielding, and to windshields around the joint. We carry stick and flux-core as well as MIG for exactly that kind of spot. When you book, tell us how exposed the gate or fence is.

FAQ

Questions about welding in Acton

Do you do mobile welding in Acton?

Yes. Gates, fence lines and anything else that cannot travel get welded where they are. Call (818) 220-8704 and tell us about the drive.

Can you weld steel sheet onto my picket fence for privacy?

Not on most Acton perimeter fences. LA County Code 22.302.060.G bars slats or other view-obscuring material fixed onto the fence and requires at least 70 percent of the fence area to stay see-through. The small lot exception in the section covers which fence types are allowed, not the ban on slats. Check your lot with county planning before you ask anyone to add plate.

Can you put our ranch name over the driveway?

Yes, inside the district's limits. Under 22.302.060.F.2.c a lot gets one entrance span, its top no more than 20 feet above natural grade, with no more than 12 square feet of combined sign face. We build the span to those figures.

My gate drags on the drive. Is it the gate or the ground?

Close the gate and look at the latch side. A gap wider at the top means the leaf has dropped, and that is a welding repair. If the leaf clears everywhere but one spot, the ground is high there. On a climbing drive it is often both, so send a photo of the gate closed and one of the drive.

Can you work on the gate motor too?

No. The operator, its electronics and its wiring belong to other trades. We fix the steel so the gate moves freely by hand, which is what the operator technician needs before adjusting anything.

What makes an Acton welding job cost more or less?

Access, where the work is done, and how much steel changes. A short repair at a gate a truck can reach is the small end. A leaf that has to come to the shop for squaring, a rotted rail that gets spliced, or a new entrance span adds steel and time. A photo before the visit narrows it down.
