Welding in Palmdale, CA

DM Welding repairs and builds steel for Palmdale homes, yards and fleets. We bring the welder to the job, or you bring the part to our shop on Division Street in Lancaster, a short run north. A cracked bracket counts as a real job here, and a photo of the break usually tells us what it needs.

How a welding repair works, step by step

  1. Design rendering of a flat steel bracket cracked along its old weld on a square tube steel rack, rust bleeding from it

    Look at the break

Send a photo of the break and say what the part does. We tell you whether it is a site job, a shop job, or a part to replace.

  2. Design rendering of a gray welding screen standing in the wind beside a cracked rail joint on an open steel picket fence

    Plan for the wind

Wind can carry shielding gas off a weld and leave small holes in the bead, so outdoor work gets self-shielded flux-cored wire or a windshield around the joint.

  3. Design rendering of a welder in a lowered helmet welding a cracked stake pocket on a steel flatbed trailer

    Weld it on site

Steel that cannot travel is welded where it stands, from a cracked joint to a torn hinge tab. We run stick and flux-core as well as MIG.

  4. Design rendering of a crack in a black steel truck frame rail, ground to a bevel with a small hole drilled at its end

    Know when to replace

A weld is not always the right answer. On a cracked truck frame rail, Peterbilt treats a weld as a temporary emergency repair and a new rail as the fix.

Mobile welding at your Palmdale property

Most calls from Palmdale are for steel that cannot travel. A side gate that has dropped on its hinges. A fence line with a broken rail. A loaded trailer parked in a yard, or a machine that will not start. For work like that the welding rig comes to you, and the repair happens where the steel stands.

Mobile work suits a job that is mostly welding: a cracked joint, a torn hinge tab, a picket that has let go, a bracket that snapped. Some jobs need a bench, a saw, or a frame clamped flat to take a twist out. Then part of the work comes back to the shop and the rest is finished on site. We tell you which kind of job it is when you call, so nobody drives out with the wrong plan.

Wind and a weld made outdoors

Wind is what an outdoor weld in Palmdale has to beat. The National Weather Service station at Palmdale Airport recorded an average wind of 12.0 mph across April 2026, with the month's strongest gust, 50 mph, on April 3. January 2026 averaged far less, yet still threw a 46 mph gust on January 8.

That matters because wire welding shields the molten metal with a cloud of gas. Miller Electric explains that wind can carry the gas off and leave porosity, small holes trapped inside the bead. For windy outdoor work it points to self-shielded flux-cored wire, which makes its own shielding, and to windshields around the joint. We run stick and flux-core as well as MIG, which lets the weld suit the site. So tell us how open the spot is: a yard facing open ground, or a corner tucked against the house. It shapes how the weld is shielded, and a strong gust can push a site job to a calmer day.

Cold mornings and wear plate

Winter at Palmdale Airport runs close to freezing overnight. In January 2026 the station logged 13 nights at or below 32°F and a low of 25°F on January 25. The month's average low was 33.5°F, against a 1991 to 2020 normal of 32.8°F.

Cold steel matters most on hardened wear plate, the AR400 and AR500 class steel that dump bodies are built from. SSAB, the maker of Hardox, wants moisture cleaned off the weld area before welding. It also raises the minimum preheat by 25°C, a 45°F change, when the temperature is below 5°C (41°F) or the air is humid. A frosted dump body on a January morning needs more heat and more time before the first pass than the same repair in summer. If your job is on wear plate, ask about timing.

Shop work on Division Street

Parts you can carry, and anything that rides on a trailer, can come to the shop at 45551 Division Street, Lancaster. Small repairs need no appointment. Walk in Monday to Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM. The saws, the plate racks and the weld bays share one building, so a part gets cut, fitted and welded in one place, dry and out of the wind.

What we weld

  • Gates: dropped leaves, torn hinge tabs, cracked frame corners, latches and drop rods
  • Steel fences: broken pickets, cracked rails, rusted post bottoms
  • Trailers and dump bodies: cracked sides, tailgates and floors
  • Equipment: racks, brackets and frames
  • Handrails: porch and stair rail, new or repaired
  • Custom parts: cut and welded to your drawing or your measurements

Our work is steel, from mild tube and plate up to abrasion resistant wear plate. If a steel part has failed, call and describe it. If it should not be welded, we say so up front.

Gates and fences in Palmdale

Plenty of Palmdale welding is gate and fence steel. Changes to a gate you already own, such as new hinges, a latch or a brace, are on our gate welding in Palmdale page, and a gate that sags or drags is covered under gate repair in Palmdale. A new gate is built in our shop to your measured opening: see custom steel gates in Palmdale. One local rule shapes all of it. Palmdale Municipal Code 17.86.040 prohibits solid metal fencing, so the gates and fences we build for this city are open steel.

Weld it, or replace it?

A weld is not always the right answer. Even for a temporary emergency weld on a cracked truck frame rail, Peterbilt's 2024 Heavy Duty Body Builder Manual has the crack drilled at its end with a 1/4 to 3/8 inch hole so it stops spreading, then beveled and welded with full penetration along its whole length.

The same manual says heat treated truck frame rails should not be welded. It treats a weld on a cracked rail as a temporary emergency repair, and names replacing the rail as the permanent fix. When a cracked frame comes in, that is where the conversation starts.

Wear plate brings its own risk, which is hydrogen cracking after the weld cools. SSAB limits processes and consumables to no more than 5 ml of hydrogen per 100 g of weld metal. Our welding and steel repair page goes further into when a weld holds.

Before you call

Send a photo of the break and say what the part does. For mobile work, tell us where it is, whether a truck can pull up close, and how exposed the spot is. We will tell you whether it is a site job, a shop job, or a part that ought to be replaced.

FAQ

Questions about welding in Palmdale

Do you do mobile welding in Palmdale?

Yes. Gates, fences, trailers and equipment that cannot come to the shop, we weld where they stand. Call (818) 220-8704 with the address and a photo, and we will set a time.

Where is your shop?

At 45551 Division Street in Lancaster, a short run north of Palmdale. Small repairs can walk in Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, without an appointment.

Is there a minimum job?

No. A single broken hinge or one cracked bracket is normal work for us.

Can you weld outside when the wind is blowing?

Often, with self-shielded flux-cored wire or a windshield around the joint, since Miller Electric lists wind as a cause of porosity in gas shielded welds. A strong gust can still move a site job to a calmer day. April 2026 brought a 50 mph gust at Palmdale Airport.

Does a cold morning change how steel is welded?

On wear plate it does. SSAB raises its minimum preheat by 25°C, a 45°F change, when the temperature is below 41°F or the air is humid, and Palmdale Airport logged 13 nights at or below freezing in January 2026.

Can you weld a cracked truck frame?

Only as a stopgap. Peterbilt's body builder manual says heat treated frame rails should not be welded, allows a weld on a cracked rail only as a temporary emergency repair, and names replacing the rail as the permanent fix.

Do you fix gate motors?

No. We repair the steel the motor moves: the frame, the hinges, the posts and the track. The gate operator and its wiring belong to other trades.

What sets the cost of a mobile welding job?

How much welding the repair needs, whether any part has to be cut or built in the shop first, the kind of steel, and how easy the spot is to reach. A photo of the break and the address get you a straight answer faster than a description does.

Do you work on weekends?

The shop is closed Saturday and Sunday, but someone is on call. If a repair cannot wait for Monday, call (818) 220-8704.
