Welding in Lancaster, CA
DM Welding repairs and builds steel at our shop on Division Street in Lancaster. Bring the part to us, or we bring the welder to you. No job is too small, and a photo of the break is often enough to tell you what it needs.

How a welding repair comes together, step by step
-

Show us the break
Send a photo of the break and tell us what the part does. Often that is enough to tell a shop job from a site job or a replacement.
-

Prep it clean and dry
Steel welds best clean, dry and out of the wind. Inside the Division Street shop, every job gets those conditions whatever the weather outside.
-

Weld to suit the spot
We weld with MIG, stick and flux-core, so the process can match the job. Out in the wind, self-shielded flux-cored wire makes its own shielding.
What we weld
- Gates. Sagging leaves, broken hinges, cracked welds and bent frames.
- Steel fences. Broken pickets, cracked rails and rusted sections.
- Trailers and dump bodies. Cracked side walls, tailgates and body damage.
- Equipment. Racks, brackets, frames and machinery parts.
- Handrails. Porch and stair rails, built new or repaired.
- Custom parts. Built in the shop from your drawing or your measurements.

If it is steel and it is broken, call us. We work in steel: plate, tube, and abrasion resistant wear plate such as AR400 and AR500.
Shop welding on Division Street
Small parts and anything that rides on a trailer can come straight to the shop. Walk in during opening hours, no appointment needed. The plate racks, the saws and the weld bays are all in the Lancaster building, so a repair can be cut, fitted and welded under one roof.
The shop also gives a weld what the open desert does not: shelter. Steel welds best when it is clean, dry and out of the wind, and inside the building every job gets those conditions whatever the weather is doing outside.
Mobile welding at your property
Some work cannot travel. A gate still hanging on its posts, a fence line, a loaded trailer, a machine that will not start. For those jobs we bring the welding to you, anywhere in Lancaster and across the Antelope Valley.
Wind is the main thing a site weld in Lancaster has to deal with. At the National Weather Service station at Fox Field in Lancaster, wind averaged 13.6 mph through April 2026, with a gust of 50 mph on April 11. That matters because many welding processes rely on a cloud of shielding gas around the arc. Miller Electric notes that wind can blow that gas away and leave porosity in the weld, and that self-shielded flux-cored wire, which makes its own shielding, is the better fit for windy outdoor work. Our crew welds with MIG, stick and flux-core, so the process can be matched to the spot. When you call about a site job, tell us how exposed the spot is. It shapes how the weld is shielded and when the job is scheduled.
Winter mornings and cold steel
Lancaster gets cold enough to change how steel is welded. The 1991 to 2020 normals for the Fox Field station put the average January low at 31.3°F. January 2026 bottomed out at 22°F and had 21 nights at or below freezing.

Cold, damp steel is a problem for hardened wear plate in particular. SSAB, the maker of Hardox, calls for the weld area to be cleaned of moisture before welding, and for the minimum preheat to be raised by 25°C (45°F) when the temperature is below 5°C (41°F) or the air is humid (SSAB, Welding of Hardox). A dump body repair on a frosty February morning needs more heat and more time than the same repair in July. Ask about timing if the work is on wear plate.
Custom steel gates
Custom gates are a core part of our work. We build driveway gates, walk gates and RV gates from steel in the Lancaster shop, cut and welded to the size of your opening.
Height depends on which side of the city line your lot sits. Inside Lancaster city limits, Lancaster Municipal Code 17.08.130.D holds a fence or gate to 4 feet within the front yard setback and 6 feet within the side and rear setbacks. On unincorporated county land around the city, LA County Code 22.110.070 sets 3.5 feet in a required front yard and 6 feet in interior side and rear yards. The parcel record settles which rule applies, and the city planning counter will confirm it for an address. We build the gate to the height your lot allows.
See custom steel gates in Lancaster for how a gate is built, or gate welding for repairs and changes to a gate you already own.
Weld it, or replace it?
Not every break should be welded. We will tell you when one should not.
- Cracks get stopped first. Even for a temporary emergency weld on a cracked truck frame rail, Peterbilt's Heavy Duty Body Builder Manual calls for a 1/4 to 3/8 inch hole drilled at the end of the crack, a beveled crack, and full penetration along its whole length.
- Heat treated truck frame rails are different. The same manual says they should not be welded. It allows a weld on a cracked rail only as a temporary emergency repair, and names replacing the rail as the permanent fix.
- Wear plate needs hydrogen control. SSAB calls for consumables giving no more than 5 ml of hydrogen per 100 g of weld metal, so the plate does not crack after it is welded.
How we judge a repair before the arc is struck is set out on the welding and steel repair page.
Before you call
Send a photo of the break and tell us what the part does. For on-site work, tell us where it is, whether we can drive up to it, and how open the spot is to the wind. We will tell you if it is a shop job, a site job, or a part that should be replaced.
