Welding in Littlerock, CA

Littlerock jobs tend to sit at the far end of a long drive, so our welder goes to them. We repair gates on dirt drives, older steel fence lines and broken parts on rural east valley properties, and anything that can travel can come to the Lancaster shop instead.

How an old steel fence line gets spliced, step by step

  1. Design rendering of a gloved hand pushing a screwdriver into the rusted base of a square steel fence post

    Try a screwdriver

Push a screwdriver into the bottom rail and the base of a few posts. It scratches sound steel and goes through rotten steel.

  2. Design rendering of a rusted steel picket fence section lying on dirt beside the gap it was cut from, the rail ends bright

    Cut to sound steel

A long run rarely fails everywhere at once. Each bad section is cut back to sound metal, and a new piece is built to match.

  3. Design rendering of a new steel picket section welded into a long, low, weathered steel fence along a dirt road

    Splice between posts

The new piece is welded in between good posts. A patch keeps the old fence, and the rest of the line is still good steel.

Welded where it stands

Littlerock sits on the agricultural east side of the Antelope Valley, and we run out from Lancaster to reach it. A gate at the end of a long dirt drive is often far from the house and from any power, so the welding goes to the gate rather than the gate coming to us. Tell us how far the gate sits from the road and whether a truck can reach it after rain.

Work we weld on site:

  • A gate that has sagged at the latch end after years of sun and wind, braced and squared
  • Hinge tabs and latches torn or worn out on a heavy farm gate
  • One or two broken sections spliced back into an otherwise sound fence line
  • Posts rusted thin at the ground, cut back to good steel
  • Trailers and equipment that cannot be moved easily

Older fence lines

A long run rarely fails everywhere at once. It goes in a few places, and the rest of the line is still good steel. We cut each bad section back to sound metal, build the new piece to match what is there, and weld it in between good posts. A screwdriver tells you where you stand: pushed into the bottom rail and the base of a few posts, it scratches sound steel and goes through rotten steel.

Where a section along a road is being replaced, check one rule first. Parts of the southeast valley fall inside the Southeast Antelope Valley Community Standards District, LA County Code Chapter 22.340. Where it applies, 22.340.060.G limits a fence in a required yard next to a public or private road to a list of materials. Iron is on that list, along with masonry, wood and chain link types. The same section rules out garage doors as fencing of any kind. Welded steel fits either way, and whether your Littlerock parcel is inside the district is a question for county planning.

Height comes from LA County Code 22.110.070: 3 feet 6 inches in a required front yard and 6 feet in an interior side or rear yard. A patch keeps the old fence. A whole new run is a new fence and has to meet those figures.

Damp winter steel

The closest climate record we use for Littlerock is the National Weather Service station at Palmdale Airport. It is not in Littlerock, so take its figures as a guide. In January 2026 it recorded 1.17 inches of precipitation against a normal of 0.98, with 0.87 inches on January 1 alone, and fog on 6 days. Average humidity for the month was 61 percent.

Damp steel matters most on wear plate. In Welding of Hardox, SSAB wants moisture cleaned from the weld area, and raises its minimum preheat by 25°C, a 45°F change, in high humidity or when the temperature is below 5°C (41°F). For a Littlerock repair on wear plate, such as a dump body floor, a dry joint and the right preheat are part of the plan.

Weld it or replace it

Not every break should be welded, and we say so. A crack gets stopped before it is filled. Peterbilt's 2024 Heavy Duty Body Builder Manual calls for a 1/4 to 3/8 inch hole drilled at its end, a beveled crack, and full penetration along its length, even for a temporary emergency weld on a cracked frame rail. The same manual rules out a lasting weld on a heat treated truck frame rail. Our welding and steel repair page explains why.

When a gate has rusted past saving, we build a new one: custom steel gates, cut and welded in the Lancaster shop to the measured opening, and delivered. If a motor might go on later, say so, and the frame, hinges and posts are sized for that load. The district rules and more on this area are on the Littlerock service area page.

Before you call

Send a photo of the damage, the length of the bad section, and directions from the nearest paved road. For a gate, add a photo of it closed and say whether it has a motor.

FAQ

Questions about welding in Littlerock

Do you do mobile welding in Littlerock?

Yes. We drive out from the Lancaster shop for gates, fence lines, trailers and equipment that cannot travel. Call (818) 220-8704 with the location and a photo.

Should I repair an old Littlerock fence line or replace it?

Repair it where the steel is still sound, which on a long rural run is usually most of it. Bad sections get cut out and spliced. A brand new run is a new fence, so it has to meet LA County Code 22.110.070, and along a road possibly the district materials list as well.

Is my parcel inside the Southeast Antelope Valley Community Standards District?

We cannot tell from an address, so ask county planning. Where the district applies, 22.340.060.G lists the materials a fence beside a road may use, and iron is one of them, so welded steel work rarely changes either way.

Does wet weather change a site weld?

It can. SSAB's rule for its wear plate is a clean, dry weld area, with more preheat in high humidity. A soft dirt drive after rain can also keep the truck from the gate. A photo and a look at the forecast help us pick the day.

What drives the cost of a welding job out here?

Distance to the work, whether it is done on site or in the shop, how many sections have to be cut out, and whether any posts have rusted through. Coating the weld zones adds a step. A photo and the length of the damage let us talk it through first.

Do you repair chain link or wood fence?

No. Our work is welded steel: picket and rail, pipe and ranch rail, solid steel panels, and the steel posts under them. Chain link, wood and vinyl go to other trades.
