Low and open suits the front yard figure. At 3 feet 6 inches a solid wall feels like a barrier and still secures nothing, while picket at that height reads as a boundary and keeps the view across a Lake Los Angeles lot. The figure covers the required front yard, the setback strip, and behind the setback the height is not capped the same way. Confirm how deep your setback runs, and the line you want behind it, with county planning.

The standard panel we build uses 3/4 inch square tube pickets set in 1.5 inch channel rail at about 4 inches on center, which leaves a clear gap near 3.25 inches. Line posts are 2.5 inch square up to 6 feet of panel. Gate posts step up with leaf width, to 4 inch square on the widest. Those sizes go heavier when a run calls for it.

We set gate posts at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper under a wide leaf, which is our practice and not a code minimum.

Picket handles grade better than solid panel. A picket panel can rake to follow the ground, where a solid one has to step. The county measures height at the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side, allowing up to 6 inches of variation if the average holds, so a raked run that keeps a steady height above the ground makes the figure simpler to hold.

A pool changes the fence. California Health and Safety Code 115923 wants the barrier at least 60 inches tall with no more than 2 inches under it, no opening that passes a 4 inch sphere, and nothing on the outside face a child under five could climb. The access gate opens away from the water, closes and latches by itself, and the latch sits no lower than 60 inches up. Put those figures side by side and a 60 inch barrier is over the 3 feet 6 inch figure for a fence in the required front yard, so plan the pool enclosure behind the setback and take any question of relief to county planning.

Iron in Lake Los Angeles sun rusts first at cut ends and around welds. Galvanizing to ASTM A123 goes on at roughly 45 to 75 microns on common fence tube, powder goes over it after the ASTM D7803 pretreatment, and an AAMA 2604 class powder holds its color longer than the basic 2603 tier, which chalks.
