Steel Privacy Fence in Lake Los Angeles, CA

Privacy at 3 feet 6 inches does not hide much. A solid panel at that height screens very little of a parked truck, so on a large Lake Los Angeles parcel the private line tends to run along the side and rear yards and cross the front of the property behind the setback rather than at the road. The front yard figure covers the required front yard only. What is allowed behind it, at the exact line you want, is a question for county planning before anything is cut.

Corner parcels add a third figure. Where a fence in a required corner side yard stands closer than 5 feet to the highway line, the limit is 3 feet 6 inches. Move it to 5 feet or more from that line and 6 feet applies. On a lot with room, that 5 foot shift is what lets a solid run turn the corner at full height.

Wind is the structural cost of going solid. With no gaps in the face, every square foot of panel pushes on the posts, where picket would let most of the air pass. A solid run takes a heavier post section and tighter spacing along the line than an open fence of the same height. In loose Lake Los Angeles ground we set posts at least 36 inches into concrete and deeper again for a solid face, which is how this shop builds rather than a published minimum.

Sloping ground changes how 6 feet is counted. The county takes the height from the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side of the fence, and lets it vary by up to 6 inches so long as the average holds. A solid panel cannot rake to follow a slope without leaving a wedge open underneath, so it steps, and the stepped run still has to hold inside the county measurement. We shoot the grade before cutting.

Coating matters more on a solid run in Lake Los Angeles simply because there is more steel facing the sun. Galvanizing under ASTM A123 sets zinc thickness by steel thickness. Powder over it forms a duplex system the American Galvanizers Association puts at roughly 1.5 to 2.3 times the combined life of both coatings alone. The powder class to ask for is AAMA 2604, not the basic 2603 tier, and the galvanized steel gets the ASTM D7803 thermal pretreatment first so the film does not pinhole.

Openings need their own sizing. A solid gate leaf is the largest wind catcher on the run, and it hangs on hinges instead of resting on a footing every few feet, so the gate post and its hardware get sized apart from the fence line. Tell us where each opening goes and how wide.
