Steel Privacy Fence in Acton, CA

We fabricate steel face privacy fencing for lots elsewhere in the Antelope Valley. For a perimeter in Acton, we tell buyers up front that it is usually the wrong product. The Acton Community Standards District, Chapter 22.302 of the county code, lists the perimeter fence types it permits: split rail, open wood, wire, or wrought iron style, or a similar open type. A continuous line of solid steel panel is not one of them.

The section adds a second test. At least 70 percent of the entire fence area must be non-view-obscuring. Slats, or any other material that blocks the view, may not be inserted into the fence or fixed onto it, so building an open frame now and cladding it a year later is not a way round. Solid lineal pieces are allowed only where they are there mainly for structure or as a minor architectural feature. On a steel fence those are the posts, the rails and the frame, not a panel sized to use up whatever the percentage leaves.

The exceptions are narrow, and we state them only as the code does. The list of open types does not apply on a residential lot under 10,000 square feet. It also gives way where a view-obscuring fence is required for screening elsewhere in Title 22. Whether the 70 percent test still binds on a small lot is a question for county planning, with your parcel number in hand. We do not answer it for you, and neither should a quote.

What fits the rule is open steel. Wrought iron style is on the list, and a welded picket fence is built in that style. Our standard panel uses 3/4 inch square pickets about 4 inches on center, which leaves a clear gap near 3.25 inches, so the run stays something you see through. An open panel also lets most of the wind pass, so its posts carry a fraction of the load a solid face would put on them.

Privacy nearer the house is a separate question, and it belongs to county planning. The district section speaks to perimeter fences. Whether a solid steel screen around a patio, a spa or a work area counts as one on your lot is for planning to say. We will not promise it. If planning confirms a screen is allowed where you want it, a solid panel screen is ordinary work for this shop.

Height follows the county base rule either way. LA County Code 22.110.070 holds a fence to 3 feet 6 inches in a required front yard and 6 feet in an interior side or rear yard, measured from the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side. On a sloped Acton lot that reference point shifts along the run, so we shoot the grade before anything is cut.
