Chain link is the call we turn down most often, and wood and vinyl go with it. Woven wire pulled tight over a pipe frame wants a stretcher, tension bands and ties, and neither wood nor vinyl takes a weld at all. What is left is our work: picket in channel rail, pipe and ranch rail, solid panel on a welded frame, and the posts under them.

A run that leans is reporting its footings. A post that has tipped has lost the concrete around it, and the panel hanging off it only lengthened the lever. Pull the steel plumb over a turned footing and the next windy week undoes the work. Those posts come out and go back at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper under a solid panel. No code sets that number. It is what this shop does.

Everything else starts low. A picket sits with its cut end down inside an open channel, and that channel holds sprinkler spray long after the run looks dry. Paint lifting in a line along the rail, and a picket that rattles, say the same thing. Run a screwdriver into the rail from underneath and into each post where it leaves the dirt. Where the tool goes through, a weld has nothing to bite, so that piece is built on the bench and spliced in between two sound posts.

The planning counter puts one of two names on the work. Leave the standing run in place and it is still the old fence. Build a new run and Acton reads a new fence, which answers the Acton Community Standards District. Under LA County Code 22.302.060.G a perimeter fence has to be split rail, open wood, wire, or wrought iron style, or a similar open type, with exceptions for residential lots under 10,000 square feet and where Title 22 requires a view-obscuring fence for screening. At least 70 percent of the entire fence area has to be non-view-obscuring, and slats or other view-obscuring material may not be inserted into or affixed to it. A solid perimeter replacement run does not fit that rule. Height comes from LA County Code 22.110.070: 3 feet 6 inches in a required front yard, 6 feet in an interior side or rear yard. Neither section puts a number on where patching stops and rebuilding starts, so county planning is who decides which name your job takes.

Welding burns the coating off either side of every joint. Re-dipping is off the table once the posts are in the ground, so the weld zone gets ground bright, treated with a zinc rich compound and topcoated on its own. Fresh color sits beside weathered color.
