Steel Fence Repair in Quartz Hill, CA

Begin with what the fence is made of, because that settles whether we can help. Welded steel is the work: picket and rail in the wrought iron style, solid privacy panels, round pipe and ranch rail, and any steel post under them. Chain link we turn down flat. Woven wire hangs under tension on a pipe frame, and putting it back takes stretching gear this shop does not run. Wood does not weld and neither does vinyl.

A line post that has tipped is reporting on the concrete under it, not on the panel above. Each panel works as a sail and levers its post sideways, and loose Quartz Hill ground gives way sooner than firm. Solid faces lean first, since a closed panel passes no air. Horse property adds a cause the wind never explains. Animals lean into a top rail and rub along a panel every day, and a post feels that push like a gust. We pull the post, open the hole wider and deeper and reset it at least 36 inches into concrete, our own shop practice rather than a published minimum.

Bent and creased are not the same damage. A rail bowed over a length pulls back or heat straightens and keeps its stiffness. A tube with a flat spot or a sharp fold has given that up for good, so the piece comes out and new tube goes in between two sound posts. Rust settles the same question lower down. On a picket panel the lower rail is a channel with its mouth facing up, so spray and rain sit in it and every picket has a cut end in that water. Steel there that has lost its wall gets spliced, not welded.

Patch a run and it stays the fence that stood there before. Replace a length and the county reads that as new fence, held to LA County Code 22.110.070. Quartz Hill is unincorporated county ground, so neither city ordinance reaches it. New steel in a required front yard stops at 3 feet 6 inches. A required interior side or rear yard allows 6 feet. In a required corner side yard it holds at 3 feet 6 inches within 5 feet of the highway line and reaches 6 feet from 5 feet back. No length and no panel count turns one job into the other in that code. County planning settles which one you have, so ask before we cut anything.

Welding burns the coating off around every joint, and a run set in concrete cannot go back into a galvanizing kettle. The zinc goes on by hand instead: cleaned to bright metal, a zinc rich compound, then the topcoat. It will not match the weathered steel beside it.
