Steel Fence Repair in Leona Valley, CA

What the fence is made of settles whether a welder is the right call. We work welded steel and nothing besides: picket and rail panels, solid steel panels on a frame, and the pipe and ranch rail that fences most horse and orchard ground around Leona Valley. Chain link, wood and vinyl get turned down on the phone, with no small-job exception. All three steel kinds stand on steel posts, so wherever a run has come apart there is a joint we can cut out and remake.

Rust follows a pattern you can read yourself. It starts low and inside, where water sits and air does not move. A channel bottom rail is a trough that keeps sprinkler throw and winter rain long after the panel face is dry, and every picket foot stands in it. Paint lifting in a line above that rail is the early sign. A picket that rattles has lost its weld already. Where a screwdriver sinks in instead of scratching, nothing is left for a bead to bite, and that length comes out between two sound posts.

A run that went over in the wind is a concrete fault wearing a steel fault's clothes. The panel catches the air and levers the post, and below grade the concrete resists on its own. Plumb them back up over a footing that has already turned and one windy season puts them down again. The work is finding every post that moved, not the worst one. New posts go at least 36 inches down in concrete, deeper under a solid panel, which is our own shop practice and not a code figure. After something drives into a run, where the steel folded matters more than how it looks. Tube bent through a long curve keeps its section and pulls or heat straightens back. Tube folded on a line does not, however straight it is made again, so a crease or kink is replaced rather than saved. Force runs along the rails into the next posts, so those get checked before the panel is judged.

Patching a run and replacing it are separate jobs at the county counter. A patched section is still the fence that stood there. A replacement run is a new fence, and a new perimeter fence in this district answers LA County Code 22.330.060.B. That section asks for perimeter fencing of an open, permeable, non-view-obscuring design, including fencing put up to hold horses and livestock, and it prohibits solid view-obscuring perimeter fences and walls, retaining walls excepted. Steel pipe sits among the examples the section gives, and they are examples, not the whole set of what passes. Nothing in it fixes a length or a share of a run at which a repair turns into a replacement, so take your own job to LA County planning and let them place it.
