A ranch gate in Leona Valley that drags, sags or will not latch usually comes back square with welding. The first job is finding what moved, the leaf or the post it hangs on, because fixing the wrong one does not hold.
Three calls come in about a Leona Valley gate: the leaf scrapes an arc into the drive, the latch needs lifting before it bites, or the post rocks by hand. The first two can start at either end of the gate, so measure before anyone welds. Shut the leaf and read the gap down the latch edge. Wider at the head than the foot and the leaf dropped. Even top to bottom and simply opened up, and the hinge post went over.
Hinge tabs tear out when the post behind them was never sized for the leaf. Ranch openings are built for a truck and trailer rather than a car, so the gate coming back square out here is a heavy one, levering that post on every pass. We step the section up or run a stiffener down the hinge line first. A post pulled out goes back at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper under a wide leaf, which is this shop's habit and not a published minimum.
On a pair of leaves the trouble shows where they meet. A drop rod holds the standing leaf down in a sleeve set in the drive, and on an unpaved Leona Valley drive that sleeve packs with grit until the rod stands on top of it. Let the leaf settle as well and the rod is aiming at a spot that moved. Shoving the driving leaf into it to force the latch splits the welds along that stile. Prop the pair open until both sit level.
Slide gates wear out before they break. Rollers are meant to wear, and a flat one knocks once a turn under the leaf. Track is not a wear part, so a bent length was driven over, and it gets pulled back or cut out. Grit is the common fault on a dirt drive: the V groove fills and the leaf rides up on it. Clearing that groove is owner work, and roller guards go back on with new rollers where a motor drives the gate.
A motor brings more standards into the repair. ASTM F2200 holds a gate to no more than 45 degrees off vertical if it leaves its hardware, so keepers, stops and catch brackets get welded on, and a horizontal slide gate takes positive stops at both ends. UL 325, set out in DASMA Technical Data Sheet 350, makes a gap of less than 16 inches between moving steel and a fixed opposing edge an entrapment zone up to 6 feet off the ground, and under a swing leaf the gap at the ground counts only where it is also more than 4 inches. The machine and its wiring stay with an operator tech. Welding repair is C-60 work.
