Gate Repair in Littlerock, CA
Three faults cover most Littlerock gate calls: a dropped leaf, a racked frame, and a gate post that has shifted. Whichever one moved gets put right before the leaf is trued up on it.
Start with two measurements and a closed gate. Tape the space between the leaf and the latch post high up, then tape it again down low. A bigger number at the top says the hinge side has settled and the far corner hangs low. Two matching numbers, both wider than they used to be, say the post has tipped outward. Write both down before anyone drives out.
A cracked weld does not stop a gate working, so most get left alone. What the crack does is let the leaf move. Once a corner joint opens, the frame flexes on every swing, the hinges and latch take load the welds used to carry, and a drop rod that always found its sleeve begins to miss. Cracks show at the frame corners, the hinge tabs and the end of a brace, and they run on under paint. We open the joint, grind to bright steel and weld through it.
A hinge tab tearing off is often the post telling on itself. Each swing levers the leaf against that post, and dry, worked ground lets a thin footing move further every year. New hardware on the same post fails the same way, so the post is stepped up in section or reset first. A replacement post goes a minimum of 36 inches down in concrete, further under a wide equipment leaf, which is shop practice here and not a code figure.
Pairs of leaves give trouble at the meeting point. A drop rod on the passive leaf lands in a sleeve cast into the drive, and once that leaf settles the rod stops finding it. Drivers force the catch by pushing one leaf into the other, which tears the welds down that edge. Leveling both leaves and moving the receiver is the repair.
An operator on the gate brings two standards in. Under ASTM F2200 a gate that leaves its supporting hardware may not fall past 45 degrees off vertical, so keepers and catch brackets go on, and a horizontal slide gets a stop at each end. UL 325 counts a gap of less than 16 inches between moving steel and a fixed opposing edge as an entrapment zone up to 6 feet above grade, and on a swing gate the gap at the ground sits in that zone only where it also runs more than 4 inches, as DASMA Technical Data Sheet 350 sets it out. Nothing we weld on may open a new one. The motor and its wiring belong elsewhere.
