Driveway Gates in Littlerock, CA

Most Littlerock driveway gates are a wide steel swing leaf, a pair, or a slide, built to clear a truck or equipment. Fix where the gate sits first, since the county caps a fence in a required front yard at 3 feet 6 inches.

Placement comes before style on a rural lot. LA County Code 22.110.070 puts a limit of 3 feet 6 inches on a fence or wall inside a required front yard, and 6 feet in a required interior side or rear yard. The front number belongs to the setback, not to the whole frontage. A gate hung right at the road usually sits inside that setback, and one set further up the drive may sit outside it, so confirm the setback line with county planning. The section is written for a fence or wall, so ask county planning how they read a gate leaf taller than 3 feet 6 inches at the spot you pick, before the frame is drawn.

Littlerock adds a second question. Some parcels fall inside the Southeast Antelope Valley Community Standards District, and a mailing address cannot confirm it either way. Where the district applies, LA County Code 22.340.060.G names the materials allowed for a fence in a required yard beside a public or private road. Iron is named. A solid steel panel is not, so a closed face gate at the road inside the district goes to county planning before we cut it. An open iron picket leaf matches a named material more plainly.

Width drives the steel on a Littlerock gate. An opening sized for a truck and trailer or a tractor with an implement is wider than a tract drive, and the load on the hinge post climbs faster than the width, because the weight hangs further out from the post. Splitting the opening into two leaves splits that load between two posts. A slide gate puts the weight on rollers and a track instead, but it needs a clear stretch beside the opening, about as long as the gate, to park in.

A dirt drive tilts the choice between swing and slide. Swing leaves need a clear arc and ground close to level where they travel. A drive that rises from the road, or ruts where the tires run, catches the bottom rail of a swing leaf. A slide clears a grade more easily, but its track and rollers live in the dust, so the track wants a firm, clean bed.

Posts are where a wide rural gate fails. Open picket infill lets most of the wind pass. A solid face takes all of it and passes it down through the post into the concrete. This shop sets gate posts at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper under a wide or solid leaf and deeper again in loose ground. That figure is our own practice and not a code number.

Power is often a long way from the end of a rural Littlerock drive. If a motor might go on later, say so at the measure. The frame, hinges and posts get sized for operator load from the start, and a wiring sleeve is welded through the post while it is still on the bench. The operator, its electronics and its wiring come from other trades. Once the gate is motorized, UL 325 and ASTM F2200 apply to it.

The finish decides how the steel looks after years of Littlerock sun. Hot dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 carries more zinc on heavier steel, and a powder topcoat over the zinc forms a duplex system that outlasts either coating on its own. For color, ask for an AAMA 2604 class powder.

FAQ

Questions about driveway gates in Littlerock

Can my gate at the road be taller than 3 feet 6 inches?

Not as a fence inside the required front yard. LA County Code 22.110.070 caps a fence or wall there at 3 feet 6 inches. The section speaks of fences and walls, so county planning is the office to ask how they treat a taller gate leaf in that yard. Moving the gate back up the drive, past the setback line, takes it out of that yard, and planning can confirm what applies at the new spot.

How far back from the road does my required front yard run?

We will not guess it from an address. Ask Los Angeles County planning for the required front yard on your parcel. At the measure we run a tape from the property line to where you want the posts, then check that distance against the setback before the gate is drawn.

Does the Southeast Antelope Valley district limit what my gate is made of?

It can, if the parcel is inside the district and the gate sits in a required yard adjoining a public or private road. LA County Code 22.340.060.G lists the materials for a fence in that yard: chain link, split rail, open wood, rock, block, split-faced or whole brick, wooden pickets, iron, or a combination. Iron is on it. Solid steel panel is not, and planning decides how the list reads for a gate.

Swing or slide on a long dirt drive?

Look at the ground first. Two swing leaves need a clear arc inside the gate and a fairly level surface to travel over, and a rutted or rising drive drags on the bottom rail. A slide needs a clear run beside the opening about as long as the gate, plus a firm bed for the track. On a wide equipment opening with room to one side, a slide often suits a Littlerock dirt drive better.

What makes a wide equipment gate cost more than an ordinary drive gate?

Steel and structure. A wider leaf needs a heavier frame tube and bracing to stay square. The hinge post carries the weight further out, so it grows in section and its concrete goes deeper. A solid face adds wind load on top of that. The coated area also scales with the gate, so galvanizing and powder rise with it.

What should I have ready before the measure?

The width you need to clear, set by the widest thing that will pass, such as a truck with a trailer or a tractor with an implement. Tell us whether there is power anywhere near the gate, whether a motor is likely, which way the drive falls from the road, and whether you know if the parcel is inside the district. Photos from the road side and the house side help.

Power is a long way from my gate. Should I still plan for a motor?

If there is any chance of one, yes. Sizing the frame, hinges and posts for an operator is simple while the steel is on the bench and awkward once a post is in concrete. We weld a wiring sleeve through the post before it is set. The power run, the operator and its wiring are other trades, and they can come years later without anyone cutting into the steel.

Who pulls the permit for a driveway gate in Littlerock?

The property owner or the contractor of record pulls it. Littlerock is unincorporated Los Angeles County, so the county decides whether a gate at your spot needs a permit at all. Ask that in the same call as the setback and the district boundary, since all three answers shape the gate.

How much deeper does a gate post go than a fence post?

Deeper, and heavier in section. The hinge post resists a leaf trying to lever it out of the ground every time the gate swings, so it gets more concrete, and more again in loose soil or under a solid face. The starting depth is in the spec list beside this page, and it is our shop practice rather than a code requirement.

My old gate hangs on a post that leans. Rebuild the gate or the post?

The post comes first. A leaf hung on a leaning post will sag again however square we make it. Where the steel of the gate is sound, we reset or replace the post, then square the frame and rehang the leaf. If the bottom rail has rusted through, a new leaf makes more sense than a patch.

Does a solid gate need anything a picket gate does not?

More post and more footing. A picket leaf lets most of the wind through, while a solid face catches all of it and hands it to the hinge post. On an exposed Littlerock drive that means a heavier post and heavier hinges. Inside the district there is a second question. A gate in a required yard adjoining a public or private road falls under the district materials list, which names iron but does not name a solid steel panel, so ask county planning before a solid leaf goes there.

What changes on the day my gate gets a motor?

The standards arrive. UL 325 covers the operator and asks for two independent entrapment protection means in each entrapment zone, not both of the same type. ASTM F2200 covers the gate: a slide in Classes I, II and III gets positive stops, guards on weight bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade, and screening that a 2.25 inch sphere cannot pass, and any gate must not fall past 45 degrees from vertical if it leaves its hardware. Neither one reaches a gate that stays manual.
