A Littlerock security gate can share its opening with an ordinary farm or drive gate and still carry far more steel: a thicker tube wall, heavier roller hardware on a slide, and posts that grow as the leaf widens. Equipment clips it and wind works at it, so the frame is welded through with no bolt together joints to loosen over time.

Where the gate sits on the parcel sets the first limit. LA County Code 22.110.070 holds a fence in a required front yard to 3 feet 6 inches and allows 6 feet in a required interior side or rear yard. A yard gate set back near the outbuildings, clear of the front setback, has room that a gate at the road does not. Ask county planning about the height at your chosen spot before we draw it.

If the parcel is inside the Southeast Antelope Valley Community Standards District, a gate in a required yard adjoining a public or private road meets a second test. Under 22.340.060.G iron is among the named materials for a fence there, and solid steel panel is not. An open welded bar or picket gate at the road fits the named material more plainly. A solid plate gate belongs further back on the parcel, or gets cleared with the county first.

Operator class follows use, never size. UL 325 puts homes serving one to four families in Class I, commercial property or five units and up in Class II, industrial yards closed to the public in Class III, and guarded restricted access in Class IV. Tell us who drives through the gate, family only, customers, tenants or staff, and the class follows from that.

Once a motor goes on, UL 325 asks for two independent entrapment protection means in each zone, of different types, with every external device monitored and reversal starting within 2 seconds. At least two warning signs go up, visible from both sides. The speed cap of 1 foot per second covers slide gate operators in Classes I and II and vertical lift operators, and only when the operator is pulling 75 pounds or more.

A wide automated slide in Classes I, II or III is where ASTM F2200 asks the most. Weight bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade get guarded, positive stops go at both ends of travel, and the gate plus the fence it covers when open is screened so a 2.25 inch sphere cannot pass, up to the top of the gate or 72 inches, whichever is less. Mesh added after the fact loads rollers sized for an open gate, so the screening gets settled on the drawing.

Rural ground around Littlerock is often loose, and a heavy leaf pulls hard on its post. We sink gate posts at least 36 inches in concrete, going deeper on a wide or solid leaf and in soft soil. That number comes from our own shop practice.

What separates a security gate from an ordinary drive gate?

The opening can be identical. The steel is not. A security gate runs thicker tube, welded joints throughout, heavier hinges or roller hardware, and posts sized for a leaf that will get pushed, leaned on and clipped. Infill spacing is picked so the gate is hard to climb or reach through, and that spacing matters again if a motor goes on.

Can I put a tall security gate across my Littlerock entrance at the road?

Check the setback first. LA County Code 22.110.070 caps a fence in a required front yard at 3 feet 6 inches, and a gate right at the road usually sits inside that yard. The section speaks of fences and walls, so county planning should say how a taller gate there is treated. It depends on who uses the gate, because UL 325 sets the class by use. A home serving one to four families is Class I. A commercial yard is Class II, and an industrial yard closed to the public is Class III. If the use might change, say so at the measure, since the frame and mounting change with the class.

Can an RV gate and the walk gate beside it share one operator?

No. UL 325 does not allow a vehicular gate operator on a pedestrian gate. If the RV gate gets a motor, the walk gate stays manual or gets hardware listed for pedestrian use. Draw the two together so the screening and the gaps work on both.

What makes a heavy yard gate cost more?

Tube wall, width, and whether it runs on a motor. Thicker steel costs more per foot and needs heavier hinges, rollers and posts. A wider opening adds frame and bracing. An automated slide adds roller guards, positive stops and screening under ASTM F2200. Galvanizing and powder scale with the steel surface.

Will blowing dust cause trouble on a Littlerock slide gate?

It collects where the gate moves. A slide rides on rollers along a track, and grit packed into the groove makes the gate drag. On a manual gate that means more push. On a motorized one the operator pulls harder every cycle. Keep the track bed firm and clear, and have the rollers and guards looked at when the gate is serviced.

Can an old hand pushed yard gate safely take a motor?

Rarely as it stands. UL 325 does not reach back to a manual gate, but the moment it is motorized the gate has to meet ASTM F2200: on a slide, positive stops, plus guarded rollers and sphere screening in Classes I, II and III, and a frame that cannot fall more than 45 degrees if it comes off its hardware. We rework the steel first. The operator and its wiring are a separate trade.

Who pulls the permit for a security gate in Littlerock?

Yes. We size the frame, the hinges or rollers, and the mounting for operator load, weld a plate where the operator bolts on, and weld a sleeve through the post for the wiring. The operator, its electronics and its wiring are other trades, and they can be added later without cutting into the steel.
