Steel Privacy Fence in Littlerock, CA

Start with where each line runs, because on a rural parcel the answer changes along the same fence. LA County Code 22.110.070 allows a fence or wall of 6 feet in a required interior side or rear yard and 3 feet 6 inches in a required front yard. A solid panel on a back line, or on a side line shared with a neighbor, can reach the full 6 feet under that section. Carry the same panel forward into the front setback and it has to drop to 3 feet 6 inches, which gives almost no privacy.

Next, check the district. Parts of the southeast valley sit inside the Southeast Antelope Valley Community Standards District, and a Littlerock address does not show whether your parcel does. Where it applies, LA County Code 22.340.060.G sets the materials for a fence in a required yard adjoining a public or private road. The list is chain link, split rail, open wood, rock, block, split-faced or whole brick, wooden pickets, iron, or a combination of those. A solid welded steel panel is not on it, and we will not tell you it counts as iron, because the section does not say so.

The same section bars garage doors used as fencing, whatever their color or uniformity of design. A fabricated steel face is a different product from a salvaged door. It is still outside the named list, so a solid run in a required yard adjoining a road inside the district needs a clear answer from county planning before any steel is ordered.

Road frontage still has workable options. Iron is named, so an open picket run can mark the frontage while the solid steel moves back to the interior lines. Block and brick are named too, and that is masonry work for another trade. For privacy closer to the house, ask county planning what the district allows at that spot, and we will build to their answer rather than promise one ahead of it.

Where a solid run is allowed, it is a heavier build than a picket line of the same height. Every square foot of face takes wind and passes it to a post. Posts go closer together and step up in section, and this shop sets them at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper where the soil is loose. That footing figure is our practice, and no code sets it.

A long side line on a rural Littlerock parcel rarely sits on flat ground. The county takes fence height at the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side of the fence. A solid panel cannot rake to follow a slope without opening a gap beneath it, so it steps, and every step gets set so it stays inside the 6 foot limit at that point. We shoot the grade along the line before cutting.

A solid face is a lot of coated steel sitting in full Littlerock sun. Hot dip galvanizing under ASTM A123 puts heavier zinc on heavier steel, and a powder topcoat over it forms a duplex system. The American Galvanizers Association puts that pairing at roughly 1.5 to 2.3 times the combined life of the two coatings alone. Ask for an AAMA 2604 class powder, since the basic 2603 tier chalks sooner.
