Steel Privacy Fence in Rosamond, CA

Privacy is mostly a back yard job, and that is where the Kern figures give the most height. Section 19.08.210.A allows 6 feet in the side and rear yards of the E and R-1 through R-3 districts. Section 19.08.210.B holds a fence in a required front yard to 4 feet. Most solid runs on a Rosamond lot therefore start at the front setback line and wrap the sides and back, with something lower or open across the front.

A Rosamond parcel in a different zoning district may not share those figures. The county writes its numbers district by district, and the ones quoted here belong to the estate and residential districts only. Look up the district on the parcel record before a height goes on a drawing.

A solid face changes the structure more than the look. With no gaps to let air through, the full panel area pushes on the line when wind comes across open Rosamond ground, and every post carries its share of that push down into the footing. We answer it with a heavier post section, closer post spacing and deeper footings. Our posts go at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper on a solid face or in loose ground. That figure is our shop practice. No code or published standard sets it.

Kern takes the height from the finished interior grade, and 19.08.210.C leaves out any portion of a wall doing the job of a retaining wall. That matters where a yard sits up on a block retaining wall and the steel runs along its top. A solid panel also cannot rake to follow a slope without leaving a wedge of daylight under it, so it steps, and each step gets measured on its own. Confirm the measuring point with the county, then we set the steps to it.

Security add-ons are where Rosamond privacy buyers most often run into the section, and both limits are written for the E and R-1 through R-3 districts. Barbed wire cannot be used along the front, side or rear lot lines or within 3 feet of them. Sharp wire or points may not project at the top of a fence or wall under 6 feet, so a panel even an inch short of 6 feet falls inside that rule. We finish the top with a flat cap, which also keeps water out of the tube.

Above 6 feet there is a process rather than a flat refusal. Under 19.08.210.G the director may allow greater height after a public hearing, on findings that the extra height permits appropriate development and is compatible with the development around it. Hold the hearing ahead of fabrication, since the height it grants sets the post length.

The gate in a privacy run is the largest single sail on the fence. It hangs from hinges on one post instead of resting on footings every few feet, so its post and hardware get sized apart from the line. The coating follows the same logic as any steel in open sun: hot dip galvanizing to ASTM A123, then a powder topcoat. The American Galvanizers Association puts that duplex system at roughly 1.5 to 2.3 times the combined life of the two coatings used alone.
