Wrought Iron Fence in Littlerock, CA

In Littlerock, ornamental iron is welded steel picket, held to 3 feet 6 inches in a required front yard and 6 feet in required interior side and rear yards. Where the district applies, picket matches the iron named for a required yard adjoining a road more plainly.

Height on a Littlerock picket fence comes from LA County Code 22.110.070: 3 feet 6 inches inside a required front yard, and 6 feet in a required interior side or rear yard. If the parcel is inside the Southeast Antelope Valley Community Standards District, 22.340.060.G adds a list of materials for a fence in a required yard adjoining a public or private road. Iron is on that list, and welded steel picket matches it more plainly than a solid panel does. Only county planning can tell you whether the district covers your parcel.

On a long frontage, decide what the line has to do. Marking a boundary along an orchard or an open field is light work: standard pickets, posts at normal spacing, one height all the way along. Keeping animals in or people out calls for closer posts and a heavier section, and the two are built and priced quite differently. Say which one you want at the measure.

This shop's standard panel runs 3/4 inch square pickets through a 1.5 inch channel rail, set about 4 inches on center for a clear gap near 3.25 inches. Line posts are 2.5 inch square up to 6 feet of panel. Gate posts get heavier as the leaf widens, up to 4 inch square. Those are our own sizes, not code minimums, and they go up when a run needs more.

Ground beside a worked Littlerock field is loose. We put posts at least 36 inches into concrete as shop practice, deeper under a gate leaf or where the soil will not hold. Open pickets pass most of the wind, so an iron line loads its posts far less than a solid run of the same height. A gate post still carries its leaf like a lever, and it gets the extra steel.

If a pool sits behind the house, the barrier rules and the county heights line up. California Health and Safety Code 115923 wants the barrier at least 60 inches tall, no more than 2 inches of clearance at the bottom, no gap that passes a 4 inch sphere, and an access gate that opens away from the water, closes itself and latches no lower than 60 inches up. A 60 inch barrier fits under the 6 foot limit for an interior side or rear yard. It cannot fit the 3 feet 6 inch front yard cap.

The outside face of a pool barrier needs care in the detailing. A wide bottom rail or a scroll at knee height gives a small child a foothold, so rails go low and tight or on the pool side, and picket tops stay plain. Our standard picket gap already stops the 4 inch sphere, so a pool changes the rails, the bottom clearance and the gate rather than the spacing.

FAQ

Questions about wrought iron fence in Littlerock

How tall can an iron fence be along the front of my Littlerock lot?

Inside the required front yard, 3 feet 6 inches under LA County Code 22.110.070. The cap belongs to that setback, not to the whole lot, so a run set back past it is not held to that number, and interior side and rear yards take 6 feet. Find where the setback line falls before choosing a height, and ask county planning for the setback on your zone.

Is iron allowed along the road inside the Southeast Antelope Valley district?

Iron is named. LA County Code 22.340.060.G lists chain link, split rail, open wood, rock, block, split-faced or whole brick, wooden pickets, iron, or a combination for a fence in a required yard adjoining a public or private road. Welded steel picket matches the iron entry more plainly than a solid panel, and county planning has the final reading. The height limits in 22.110.070 still apply on top of the material rule.

Can a pool barrier run along the front of the property?

Not at barrier height inside the required front yard. Health and Safety Code 115923 wants at least 60 inches, and LA County Code 22.110.070 caps a front yard fence at 3 feet 6 inches. Both cannot be met there, so plan the barrier line outside the required front yard, or ask county planning what else is possible. Side and rear yards allow 6 feet, which clears the 60 inch minimum.

What else does a new pool need besides the fence?

A second safety feature. Health and Safety Code 115922 asks for at least two of seven listed drowning prevention features when a building permit is issued for a new pool or a remodel at a private single family home. The enclosure counts as one. Pick the second before the fence is drawn, because some choices affect where the gate goes.

What should an iron frontage on an orchard or field be built for?

Decide whether it marks the line or holds it. A boundary run can use the standard panel at normal post spacing. A line that has to keep animals in or trespassers out wants closer posts, a heavier rail, and a taller panel where the yard allows one. Only the second needs the extra steel.

Why are the gate posts so much heavier than the line posts?

A line post carries a panel on each side. A gate post carries a leaf hanging off one face, and every swing tries to lever it out of the ground. On our standard fence the line posts are 2.5 inch square and the gate posts step up toward 4 inch square as the leaf widens. On a wide rural drive gate that difference shows.

My frontage slopes. Should the panels be stepped or raked?

A picket panel can be raked to follow the ground or stepped level at each post, and which one suits your run gets settled when we shoot the grade. Stepped panels leave a wedge beneath every step. Around a pool that wedge can break the 2 inch clearance limit, so the bottom has to stay inside it whichever way the panels go. The county reads height at the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side of the fence.

Can you repair a rusted section instead of replacing the frontage?

Usually. Rust on a picket line starts at the bottom, where water and soil sit against the steel. If the pickets and rail still have their wall thickness above that point, we cut out the bad lengths, weld in new steel and recoat the weld zone. Where the rail itself has rotted along the run, a new panel beats patching.

Who pulls a permit for an iron fence in Littlerock?

The owner or the contractor of record. Los Angeles County decides whether the run needs a permit at all, because Littlerock is unincorporated county ground. Where a building permit is issued for a new pool or a remodel at a private single family home, Health and Safety Code 115922 applies as well.

What finish holds up on iron in Littlerock?

Galvanizing first, then color. Hot dip galvanizing under ASTM A123 carries more zinc on thicker steel, and a powder topcoat over it forms a duplex system the American Galvanizers Association puts at 1.5 to 2.3 times the combined life of the two alone. Ask for an AAMA 2604 class powder and for ASTM D7803 prep, which keeps outgassing pinholes out of the film.

Does an iron fence need the same heavy posts as a solid fence?

No. Open pickets let most of the wind through, so the posts along an iron run carry a fraction of what a solid steel face hands them. Height, gate width and loose ground still set the section and the concrete, but an iron line can run lighter posts at wider spacing than a privacy run of the same height.

What do you need from me before the measure?

Frontage and line lengths, which lines face a road, the height you want on each, gate widths and what passes through them, and whether a pool is involved. If you already know your zone, or whether the parcel is inside the Southeast Antelope Valley district, bring that as well.
