Handrails and Railings in Littlerock, CA

Porches and steps on older Littlerock homes settle. Risers stop matching and a landing tips, so the rail gets built to the geometry in front of us rather than cut down from stock lengths. We count the risers and measure each run on site, then weld the rail in the shop.

The mount matters more than the tube. A baseplate on top of a step puts its anchors at the nosing, the weakest concrete on the step, and an anchor that close to the edge can break out even when the steel above is fine. A side mount through the face of the step pulls the fasteners back from that edge. On thick sound concrete, a post grouted into a core drilled hole holds best and is the hardest to undo. A wall bracket needs a stud or masonry behind it, never bare stucco.

Rust starts low and on the inside. Water sits in the joint where a baseplate meets concrete and runs down open tube, so we cap the tops and drill drains at the low points. Galvanized parts need vent and drain holes regardless. A primed and painted rail touches up easily and takes a site weld. Galvanizing under an AAMA 2604 class powder lasts far longer in this sun.

A rail on a new porch or ramp can be part of permitted work. The property owner or the contractor of record pulls that permit, and the county decides whether one is needed. If a guard near a pool is counted toward the barrier, California Health and Safety Code 115923 sets it at 60 inches minimum, with no gap passing a 4 inch sphere and no footholds on the outside.
