Handrails and Railings in Palmdale, CA

Steps that have settled, or were poured a little out of square, rarely line up with a stock rail. We measure each riser and landing, then cut and weld the rail so the posts land where the concrete is sound. A handrail is the part a hand grips on a stair. A guard is the barrier along an open edge. They are often one welded piece, checked against separate code figures.

The mount decides how long a rail lasts. A baseplate on the tread puts anchors near the nosing, where concrete breaks out most easily. A side mount through the face of the step moves them back from that edge. A post cored and grouted into thick concrete holds best and is the hardest to undo. A wall rail on stucco has to reach framing or masonry, not lath.

Galvanizing under an AAMA 2604 class powder outlasts paint in the Antelope Valley sun, and the ASTM D7803 thermal prep keeps pinholes out of the powder. Paint costs less and is easier to touch up after a site weld. Open tube gets capped and drained so water does not rust it from the inside.

Rust tends to start where nobody looks. Water collects inside open tube and in the joint between a baseplate and the concrete, so a repair begins by cutting into that joint. When only the base has rotted, we cut back to clean steel, splice in new tube and reset the post, and the rest of the run stays in place.

Near a pool, a rail or guard can be counted as part of the pool barrier. Then California Health and Safety Code 115923 applies: 60 inches minimum, 2 inches or less underneath, no gap a 4 inch sphere passes, and nothing climbable on the outside. The City of Palmdale decides whether rail work needs a permit, and the owner or the contractor of record pulls it.
