Handrails and Railings in Acton, CA

A stair on a sloped Acton lot rarely lines up with stock rail. Where steps have settled or a ramp turns, we measure each rise and landing and build the rail to that geometry. A handrail is what a hand grips on the stair. A guard is the barrier along the open edge of a raised landing or deck. Plan check looks at each one against its own numbers.

The mount usually fails before the tube does. A baseplate on the tread puts anchors at the nosing, the weakest concrete on the step, where an anchor can break a cone out of the edge. A side mount pulls the fasteners back into the body of the slab but loads them in pry, so slab thickness matters. On thick sound concrete we core drill and grout the post in. A wall bracket has to reach a stud or masonry, not stucco over lath.

Rust starts low, at the joint under the base plate and inside open tube. We cap the tops and drain the low points. For outdoor rail, hot dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 under an AAMA 2604 class powder lasts far longer than paint, and ASTM D7803 prep keeps pinholes out of the powder. Paint costs less and takes a site touch up, which suits a rail we may need to change later.

A guard beside a pool can be counted as part of the pool barrier. California Health and Safety Code 115923 then applies: at least 60 inches tall, no more than 2 inches underneath, no gap passing a 4 inch sphere and nothing to climb on the outside.
