Security Gates in Rosamond, CA

Section 19.08.210.D takes most deterrent hardware off the table in the E and R-1 through R-3 districts. No barbed wire may be used along the front, side or rear lot lines or within 3 feet of them. No sharp wire or points may project from the top of a fence or wall under 6 feet. Electrified fence is not permitted regardless of location, except for animal containment on a residential suburban combining district lot of at least two and a half acres. Guarding equipment does not qualify.

Plenty of Rosamond property is industrial, and the figures above are written for the estate and residential districts. We do not stretch them to cover another district. If the gate is going on an industrial or commercial parcel, get that district's fence rules from Kern County planning before anything is drawn, including whether wire is allowed on top.

With the add-ons limited, security on a Rosamond lot comes from the gate itself. The frame is welded steel tube with no bolt together joints to back out. In this shop's standard, line posts run 2.5 inch square for panels up to 6 feet, and gate posts reach 4 inch square on the widest leaves. Gate posts sit at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper on a wide leaf or a solid panel. That figure is shop practice, not a code or a standard.

Height helps where the zoning district on a Rosamond parcel allows it. A side or rear yard gate in those districts can reach 6 feet under 19.08.210.A, and the points clause is written for fences under 6 feet. At the road, those districts hold a fence in a required front yard to 4 feet under 19.08.210.B. The director can allow more after a public hearing under 19.08.210.G. Some owners set the secured gate further back on the lot and ask the county what height applies there.

Under UL 325 the site decides the operator class. An equipment yard the public never drives into is normally Class III. Let customers or tenants through and it becomes Class II. Residential use for one to four families is Class I, and Class IV is guarded restricted access, supervised by security personnel. The class changes the protection the operator needs, and with it the frame and mounting we build in.

A yard slide gate that gets a motor falls under ASTM F2200 for Classes I to III. Exposed weight bearing rollers 8 feet or less above grade are guarded or covered, positive stops go at both ends of travel, and the gate must not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it leaves its hardware. Screening against a 2.25 inch sphere runs to the top of the gate or 72 inches above grade, whichever is less, across the gate and the fence it covers when open. Mesh added after the fact puts wind area on rollers never sized for it, so infill gets settled on the drawing.

A Rosamond yard gate takes knocks from equipment on top of the sun and grit. Galvanizing under ASTM A123, then a powder topcoat over ASTM D7803 prep, makes a duplex system the American Galvanizers Association puts at roughly 1.5 to 2.3 times the combined life of the two coatings alone.
