Security Gates in Acton, CA

Heavier starts at the frame. A yard gate spans more than a house gate and takes knocks from trailers and equipment, so the tube wall goes up and the hinges, rollers and posts grow with it. On our drawings a panel up to 6 feet gets a 2.5 inch square post, and gate posts step up to 4 inch square as the leaf widens. We set gate posts at least 36 inches into concrete, deeper under a wide or solid leaf. That figure is shop practice, not a code minimum.

Keeping a trailer or a tractor out of sight is a common reason to want a solid gate. On an Acton perimeter that request meets 22.302.060.G. The district limits perimeter fences to split rail, open wood, wire, or wrought iron style, or a similar open type, with exceptions the section names, and wants at least 70 percent of the fence area non-view-obscuring. How a solid leaf in that line is counted is a question for county planning. A gate standing inside the lot, around a work yard near the house, may be a different question, and planning answers that one too.

An open leaf gets the same welded frame as a solid one, with no bolt together joints to work loose. The difference is what someone outside can see, and how much wind the leaf catches, since an open panel lets most of the air pass through.

Height runs on the county base rule. LA County Code 22.110.070 allows 3 feet 6 inches in a required front yard and 6 feet in an interior side or rear yard, taken from the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side. A tall RV gate at the road runs into the front yard figure. Moved back into an interior side yard, it has more room. Confirm with county planning how the section applies to a gate on your parcel.

Once a yard gate gets a motor, UL 325 classes follow the use of the property. Class I covers residential use at one to four families. Class III is industrial and not open to the public, so a fenced equipment yard the public never enters is normally Class III, and the same yard becomes Class II once customers or tenants drive through. The class decides how much protection the operator trade fits, so tell us the use before the frame and mounting are designed.

A powered slide gate on a working yard carries the most ASTM F2200 rules: guards on exposed weight bearing rollers 8 feet or less above grade, positive stops at both ends, and no 2.25 inch sphere through the gate or the fence it covers when open, up to 72 inches or the top of the gate if that is lower. Mesh added to meet that puts sail area on the leaf and makes it less open to view, which the district cares about. We settle infill on the drawing, before the rollers are sized.

A walk gate beside the yard gate stays on its own hardware, because UL 325 never allows a vehicular operator on a pedestrian gate. Hot dip galvanizing under ASTM A123 with an AAMA 2604 class powder carries all of it through the sun, and ASTM D7803 prep keeps the powder from pinholing.
