Automatic Gate Installation in Acton, CA

At the foot of a long Acton drive, a gate works out of sight of the house. Nobody watches it drag or bind until the operator stalls. So the steel has to move freely by hand before any motor goes on. We check the frame for square, the hinges for wear and the posts for lean, then fix whatever is off.

UL 325 takes hold the day a manual gate gets a motor. It sorts operators by how the property is used. Class I covers a home serving one to four families. Class II covers commercial or multifamily property of five units and up. If one gate serves several households along a shared private drive, settle the class with the operator trade before the steel is sized.

ASTM F2200 governs the build. A powered gate cannot fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it comes off its hardware. On Classes I, II and III, a slide gate also needs positive stops at both ends, guards on exposed weight bearing rollers 8 feet or less above grade, and screening so a 2.25 inch sphere cannot pass the gate or the fence it covers when open, up to 72 inches above grade or the top of a shorter gate. Our standard picket gap is near 3.25 inches, so a slide leaf bound for an operator gets tighter infill in the shop, and so does the fence it covers.

Tighter infill brings the Acton district rule back in. Section 22.302.060.G limits a perimeter fence to split rail, open wood, wire, or wrought iron style, or a similar open type, with exceptions the section names, and wants at least 70 percent of the fence area non-view-obscuring. A mesh backed slide leaf and the screened fence behind it are less open than picket. Raise how that counts with county planning before you pick a slide. A swing gate carries no sphere screening, so on a drive with arc room it can keep the open picket leaf.

Inside the frame, a welded mounting plate carries operator load into the tube instead of the infill. Sleeves welded through the frame let sensor wiring run inside the steel, since a crushed external cable is a common reason a monitored device faults.
