Automatic Gate Installation in Lancaster, CA

For an automatic gate in Lancaster, our part is the steel: a square frame, hinges or track, and a mounting plate built to carry an operator. The operator, its electronics and its wiring come from another trade.

A motor pushes a gate every cycle, all year. Any sag, any hinge worn out of round, any post that has shifted in its footing shows up fast once that happens. So the work begins at the frame. We square it, brace the span, rebuild or upsize the hinges, and weld a plate that carries the operator's load into the frame rather than the infill. Sleeves go through the tube so sensor wiring runs inside the steel instead of strapped along it.

The property decides the operator class under UL 325, not the size of the gate. A single family tract home is Class I, which covers one to four families. An apartment complex is Class II once it reaches five units, even if its gate is narrow. Class III is an industrial yard the public does not enter, and Class IV is a guarded gate with security staff. Tell us which one you are before the frame is drawn.

ASTM F2200 governs how a powered gate is built. The gate must not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it comes off its hardware. On Classes I, II and III, a horizontal slide gate needs positive stops at both ends, guards on weight bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade, and screening so a 2.25 inch sphere cannot pass, up to 72 inches or the top of a shorter gate. The fence it covers when open counts too. Swing gates do not carry the screening rule, and Class IV gates fall outside these slide gate provisions.

Existing gates can often be reworked rather than replaced. Small gates that need it come back to our Division Street shop to be squared and braced on the table. Posts and runs set in concrete get welded where they stand. The shop is open weekdays 8 to 5, with someone on call on weekends.

FAQ

Questions about automatic gate installation in Lancaster

Do you put the operator on as well?

No. DM Welding builds and reworks the steel: frame, hinges, bracing, track, rollers, roller guards, mounting plate and wiring sleeves. The operator, its electronics and its wiring are other trades. We hand them a gate that is square and ready.

My Lancaster gate is manual. Can it be converted?

Usually. UL 325 does not reach a manual gate, but it applies from the day a motor is added, and ASTM F2200 comes with it. An older gate often needs steel work before that point: new hinges, a brace, stops, roller guards or screening on a slide gate.

Which operator class fits my property?

UL 325 sets it by use. One to four families is Class I. Commercial property, or multifamily with five or more units, is Class II. An industrial site closed to the public is Class III, and a guarded site with security staff is Class IV. The class changes what equipment belongs on the gate.

Can one operator run the driveway gate and the walk gate beside it?

No. UL 325 does not allow a vehicular gate operator on a pedestrian gate. Where people walk in, plan separate pedestrian access. A walk gate next to a slide gate also changes the screening and the gaps, so decide on it at the start.

What do you need to quote the steel for an automatic gate?

The opening width, the slope across it, the fence line on each side, where power reaches, and what kind of property it is. Photos of the existing gate and its hinges help if we are reworking one rather than building new.

Why does the gate's weight matter before the operator is picked?

An operator running near the top of its range every cycle wears out early. Knowing the finished weight of the leaf lets the operator tech size the unit with room to spare. A solid leaf and a picket leaf of the same width are very different loads.

Is a slide gate more work to prepare than a swing gate?

Generally, yes. Under ASTM F2200, on Classes I through III, a slide gate needs positive stops at both ends of travel, guards on weight bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade, and screening against a 2.25 inch sphere across the gate and the fence it covers when open. A swing gate carries the fall rule but not the screening.
