Automatic Gate Installation in Palmdale, CA

Plenty of jobs start with a gate that is already hanging. A leaf that has sagged or a track with a flat spot will fight any motor, so the gate gets moved by hand first. Then we square the frame, brace the span and replace worn hinges before anyone chooses an opener. A welded mounting plate carries the operator's push into the frame tube rather than the pickets.

UL 325 sorts the property into a usage class, and the class sets the entrapment protection the operator trade has to fit. Class I is residential, one to four families. Class II is commercial, or multifamily at five units and up. Class III is industrial and not open to the public. Class IV is guarded restricted access, supervised by security personnel. Some of the rules land squarely on the steel. Under ASTM F2200 a gate may not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it leaves its hardware. A horizontal slide gate in Classes I, II or III also needs positive stops at both ends of travel, guards on weight bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade, and screening so a 2.25 inch sphere cannot pass the gate or the fence it covers when open, up to 72 inches above grade or the top of a shorter gate. We weld sleeves through the tube so sensor cable runs inside, where a bumper cannot crush it.

Palmdale's code speaks to driveway gates directly, and automation is part of it. Across a driveway in the front setback of a home lot, Palmdale Municipal Code 17.86.040 wants an automated rolling gate or a gate that opens inward, away from the public right-of-way. A motorized slide fits the first half. A swing operator has to pull its leaves in toward the house, so the arms and the mounting plate go on the inside face. On a lot of 20,000 square feet or more, a vehicle gate sits at least 20 feet back from the property line, which moves the operator and its power up the drive. The same section prohibits solid metal fencing, so the leaf the motor pushes is open steel.
