Automatic Gate Installation in Littlerock, CA

In Littlerock we build and rework the steel side of an automatic gate: frame, hinges, bracing, track, rollers, mounting plate and wiring sleeves. The operator and its wiring come from other trades, and UL 325 applies the day a motor goes on.

A long Littlerock drive shapes the job before any motor is chosen. Power may be a long way from the gate, and bringing it there is electrical work. Our part is to weld sleeves through the post and frame while they are still on the bench, so the wire has a protected path through the steel. Cutting that path into a set post later is slower and messier.

A motor drives a heavy equipment gate harder than a person ever does. Sag, a hinge worn oval or a post that has shifted becomes strain on the operator every cycle. We square and brace the frame, rebuild or upsize the hinges, and weld a mounting plate so the operator pushes on the frame instead of the infill. On a dirt drive the track bed and the roller guards get the same attention, because grit is the first thing slide rollers meet.

UL 325 sets the operator class by use. Class I covers a home serving one to four families, Class II commercial or five units and up, Class III an industrial yard closed to the public, and Class IV guarded access. Each entrapment zone needs two independent means of protection, not both of one type, and every external device is monitored. Reversal starts within 2 seconds. A gap under 16 inches between the moving gate and a fixed edge, up to 6 feet above grade, marks a zone.

ASTM F2200 governs the gate once it is automated. It must not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it leaves its hardware, and protrusions come off, with exceptions the standard names. A horizontal slide gets positive stops at both ends. On a slide in Classes I, II and III, weight bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade get guarded, and the gate plus the fence it covers when open is screened against a 2.25 inch sphere, up to 72 inches or the top of a shorter gate. The sign rule comes from UL 325 instead: at least two warning signs, visible from both sides of the opening.

FAQ

Questions about automatic gate installation in Littlerock

Does a farm gate on a Littlerock drive need new steel before it gets a motor?

Usually some. A gate built for hand use rarely has positive stops, roller guards or screening, and its hinges were sized for a person pushing it now and then. Those get added or rebuilt before the operator goes on, because ASTM F2200 applies once the gate is powered.

Do you sell or wire the operator?

No. Our work is the steel: frame, hinges, bracing, track, rollers, roller guards, the mounting plate and the wiring sleeves. The operator, its electronics and its wiring are handled by other trades. We agree the mounting point with them so their equipment bolts to a square, braced frame.

Is a swing or a slide easier to automate on a Littlerock dirt drive?

Each brings its own work. A swing gate carries no UL 325 speed limit and no sphere screening under ASTM F2200, but its leaves need a level arc and a drive that does not rise into the bottom rail. A slide carries the 1 foot per second cap in Classes I and II when the operator pulls 75 pounds or more, and it needs guarded rollers, stops, screening and a track kept clear of dust.

What should I tell you before you size the frame?

The opening width, the slope across it, what drives through, and who uses the gate, since use sets the operator class. Say whether power already reaches the gate or has to come down the drive. If an operator has been picked, share the model, because an opener working near the top of its range every cycle wears out early.

Why does the manual latch have to come off?

ASTM F2200 does not allow protrusions on an automated gate beyond a short list of exceptions the standard names, and a manual latch is not one of them. It comes off and a receiver guide takes its place, so the leaf still lands true when it closes.

Who pulls the permit for an automated gate in Littlerock?

The property owner or the contractor of record. Los Angeles County decides whether the gate and the electrical work need permits. Check the gate's location against LA County Code 22.110.070 in the same call, since a fence in a required front yard is capped at 3 feet 6 inches.

Does UL 325 care how old my gate is?

No. The standard is not retroactive, so a manual gate that has hung there for decades is fine as it is. Put a motor on it and UL 325 applies from that day, along with the gate construction rules in ASTM F2200. The age of the steel only decides how much rework comes first.
