A motor pushes a gate the same way every cycle, so any drag in the steel gets worse under power. On a wide ranch gate the usual faults are a leaf that has dropped toward the latch, a hinge worn out of round, or a slide gate whose track has bent. Release the operator and move the gate by hand. If it binds, we square the frame, weld in a brace, rebuild the hinges and add a welded mounting plate so the operator pushes on the frame instead of the infill.

UL 325 is not retroactive, but it applies the day a manual gate gets a motor, and ASTM F2200 construction rules come with it. The gate must not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it leaves its hardware. On Classes I, II and III, a horizontal slide gate needs positive stops at both ends of travel, and any weight bearing exposed roller 8 feet or less above grade gets a guard or a cover. Those slide gate provisions do not apply to a Class IV gate.

One rule catches Quartz Hill lots in particular. Under ASTM F2200, a slide gate on Classes I, II and III has to be screened so a 2.25 inch sphere cannot get through the gate or through the fence it covers when open, up to 72 inches above grade or the top of a shorter gate. An open rail fence along a pasture will not stop that sphere. The stretch of fence the leaf parks beside gets screened before the motor goes on.

The use of the property sets the operator class. Class I covers residential use for one to four families, and Class II is commercial or multifamily of five units and up. Each entrapment zone needs two independent means of protection, not both of the same type, with every external device monitored. At least two warning signs go up where both sides of the opening can see them. We weld sleeves through the frame so sensor cable runs inside the tube.
