Weight comes before the operator. A heavy yard gate on a big Lake Los Angeles lot needs an opener with headroom, and nobody can pick one with headroom without knowing what the leaf weighs. We give the operator tech that figure from the steel we build. An opener running near the top of its range every cycle wears out early.

Distance from power is the other early question. On a large parcel the gate can sit a long way from a house set back from the road. Tell us where power will reach the gate and we weld sleeves through the post and frame, so sensor wiring runs inside the tube instead of strapped outside, where a crushed cable is a common reason a monitored device faults. Running the line itself is not our work.

Motorizing brings UL 325 in from the first day. The class follows the property: Class I for a home of one to four families, Class III for an industrial yard with no public access. Each entrapment zone needs two independent means of protection, not both of the same type, and every external device is monitored. At least two warning signs go up, visible from both sides of the opening.

The gate itself answers to ASTM F2200. It must not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if it leaves its hardware, so catch brackets get welded on. On Classes I to III a slide gate gets positive stops at both ends, guards on exposed weight bearing rollers 8 feet or less above grade, and screening that stops a 2.25 inch sphere up to 72 inches above grade or the top of a shorter gate. A manual latch comes off, because protrusions are not permitted apart from the exceptions the standard lists.
