We fabricate the uprights, the crossbar and the gate as one design, so the span clears the tallest thing that uses the drive and still fits those limits. The frame is welded steel tube cut to the opening we measure. A leaf hangs off one post like a lever, so post and hinge sizes climb as the leaf widens, out to 4 inch square gate posts on the widest leaves. A single swing leaf runs to roughly 16 feet in what this shop builds. Wider openings split into two leaves. We set gate posts at least 36 inches into concrete and deeper under a wide or solid leaf. That number is our shop practice, not a code minimum.

A gate a long way from the house is a natural candidate for a motor, now or years from now. We size the hinges and posts for the load an operator adds, weld a mounting plate into the frame, and run a sleeve through the post so wiring has a path through the steel. UL 325 and ASTM F2200 leave a manual gate alone, but both apply the day it is motorized. The operator, its electronics and its wiring belong to other trades. Our part is the steel they mount to.

Swing or slide on a drive that rises from the road?

Two swing leaves need arc space inside the property and a drive close to level at the opening, so on a rising drive the bottom rail can drag before the leaf is fully open. A slide gate clears the grade where a swing leaf would drag, but it needs a clear run beside the opening of roughly the gate width again to park the leaf. Which finish holds up at the end of an open drive?

Hot dip galvanizing to ASTM A123, where coating thickness follows the thickness of the steel, then powder over it. The American Galvanizers Association puts that duplex system at roughly 1.5 to 2.3 times the combined life of the two coatings alone. The prep in ASTM D7803 keeps pinholes out of the powder. For color, ask for an AAMA 2604 class powder rather than the basic 2603 tier.

Can you rebuild my old gate rather than start over?

Often. A lot of what we work on is steel somebody else built. Racked frames get squared, worn hinges get cut out and replaced, a rotted bottom rail gets rebuilt, and a leaf that has dropped at the latch gets a brace. If the posts have moved, that gets corrected before the leaf is rehung, or the same sag comes back.
