Driveway Gates in Leona Valley, CA
A long ranch drive needs a steel gate sized to its opening and hung on posts that can carry it. An open leaf also avoids asking whether a solid one clashes with the Leona Valley ban on solid perimeter fencing.
Width sets the rest of a Leona Valley gate job. A leaf hangs off its hinge post, so every extra foot of gate adds turning force on that post and on the concrete under it, and the load grows faster than the width. On a wide opening the span usually splits into two leaves so neither post carries all of it. Post sections step up as each leaf gets wider. We set gate posts at least 36 inches into concrete and deeper under a wide leaf. That footing is our shop's own practice, not a code figure.
The Leona Valley district rule in LA County Code 22.330.060.B is written about perimeter fencing. It asks for an open design you can see through, names steel pipe among the permitted materials, and prohibits solid view-obscuring perimeter fences and walls apart from retaining walls. The text we build from does not single out gates. A solid steel leaf set into an open rail line is a detail to put in front of county planning before any steel is cut. A leaf framed and filled with open steel stays as see-through as the fence beside it.
Height is a separate county question. LA County Code 22.110.070 holds a fence in a required front yard to 3 feet 6 inches, and lets one in an interior side or rear yard reach 6 feet. Height is taken from the highest average ground level within 3 feet of either side. A gate set well back up the drive and a gate right at the road can land in different yards, with different limits. Where your required front yard ends is a parcel question for county planning.
Swing or slide depends on the ground at a Leona Valley opening. Two swing leaves need clear arc room on the inside and a fairly level approach, or the bottom rail catches the grade as it opens. A slide gate needs a straight, clear run beside the opening to park the leaf. A drive that climbs from the road, or a ditch or a tree line along the fence, often picks the type before looks do.
We cut the frame from steel tube to the measured opening and weld it square on the bench. A diagonal brace carries the weight of the leaf back toward the hinge side, where it belongs. Welded joints move the load through steel instead of bolts that wind and daily use work loose over the years.
Plan for a motor now even if it comes later. The frame, hinges and posts get sized for the extra load, and a sleeve is welded through the post as a path for wiring. The operator and its electronics are other trades. Once a gate is motorized, UL 325 applies and the ASTM F2200 construction rules come with it, including a limit of 45 degrees from vertical if the gate ever comes off its hardware.
