Run that hand test before anyone drives out to an Acton gate at the bottom of a long drive. With the operator released, a swing leaf should move freely and stay where you leave it. A slide leaf should roll with one hand. Binding, dragging or drifting shut points at a hinge, a post, the track or a roller, not the motor.

Grade makes a small sag expensive. A leaf that drops at the latch end on a sloped drive meets the pavement sooner than it did the day it was hung, and the motor then pulls against the ground on every cycle. Cracked corner welds and a missing diagonal brace are the usual causes. We reweld the corners, fit or replace the brace and cut in new hinges where the old ones have worn oval.

The electronic side has its own signs. A remote that does nothing while a held wall button still moves the gate means constant pressure mode, the operator's response to a monitored safety device going missing or faulting. A gate that opens and then parks open often had a sensor or contact edge trip, which locks out the timer to close until the system resets. Check the photo eyes and their brackets first.

Our work is the frame, hinges, bracing, track, rollers and roller guards. ASTM F2200 wants exposed weight bearing rollers 8 feet or less above grade guarded or covered, so a slide gate missing those guards gets them. The operator, its electronics and its wiring belong to other trades, and we hand them a gate that moves freely.
